Description: This seminar offers a multifaceted look at dance from its French origins through its development in the 20th century, including visual arts and the role of the French state.

Following a celebrated seminar in partnership with PAM, we will next honor dance in partnership with White Bird as they present France's National Center for Contemporary Dance/Angers, under the direction of former Cunningham dancer Robert Swinston. For the last session of the seminar, students will attend CNDC-Angers' performance of two masterworks by the legendary Merce Cunningham: “Biped” and “Beach Birds” at the Newmark Theatre. (Ticket price included in seminar tuition.)

Each session will be led by a different, specialized instructor.

Le goût du vin - A delicious journey through the wine regions of France

Explore and taste French wines through the lens of history and culture. Learn to read and demystify French wine labels as you discover new favorites and find hidden treasures. Wine & refreshments paired to the region will be served at each session. The seminar will be in English, with appropriate French vocabulary. The two five-week seminars may be taken in sequence or stand-alone. There is a $65 materials fee to cover wine & food for each five week seminar.

To take any single session for $55 (materials fee included), please contact the office at 503.223.8388 by the Monday before the class.

This class is a reprise of the popular fall Goût du vin seminars. New wine tastings will be offered, and students will have online access to lecture notes.

Maxine Borcherding, Chef, Sommelier, and lover of wine and fine food, will guide you through an in-depth look at the wine regions of France. Maxine’s professional certifications include Sommelier (International Sommelier Guild), French Wine Scholar (French Wine Academy), Spanish Wine Educator (Wine Academy of Spain), and Wine Location Specialist (Center for Wine Origins). She recently retired from 16 years as Lead Chef Instructor at the Oregon Culinary Institute.

Hoke Harden is a B.N.I.C. (Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac) Certified Cognac Educator, a master instructor with the Wine Scholar Guild, and Wine & Spirits Instructor at Mt. Hood Community College.

Opera & Chocolate Cake : Opera/Cake

Description: An epicurean adventure - cooking demo and tasting!

The Alliance is offering an evening of conversation in French about Julia Child and an iconic French chocolate cake, combined with a cooking demo and tasting. The seminar takes place in a private home in Irvington. The seminar will be led by our teacher and epicurean Francine Chough.

If you like opera, you may want to check out “An American Quartet,” performed in February in Hampton Opera Center, that includes Hoiby’s one-act opera “Bon Appétit” in which the beloved French chef Julia Child explains how to bake the perfect French chocolate cake.  The seminar will be led by our teacher and epicurean Francine Chough.

Seminar students will receive 15% discount on performance tickets, as long as available. The performance will be in the Hampton Opera Center. Hurry up, the tickets are going fast. Some of the performances are already sold out!

Parking Information

Street parking on SW 20th St. facing the Kamm House is limited. Free parking is available in Lot B at SW 18th and SW Columbia. Please obtain a parking pass from the office.

After 6 pm weekdays, students may park in the Willamette Dental lot at SW 20th and SW Jefferson as available.
