The Portland chapter is the 15th largest in the U.S. It started in 1933, fell dormant during WWII, and was reinstated in 1983 as a teaching Alliance by co-founders Sabine de Carbonnel and Jean-Claude Paris, who is also the founder of the French American International School. The Alliance Française de Portland is a self-funded nonprofit organization and does not receive financial support from government. Membership dues provide a portion of the group's operating funds.
